Monroe Sweeney, Former Official, Passes Sunday
TAYLOR, Jan. 30 (AP) - Death has taken J. Monroe Sweeney, one of the best known baseball and football officials in the Southwest.
Sweeney, 55, one-time big league baseball umpire and football official of the Southwest Conference, died yesterday after suffering a heart attack.
He was stricken shortly after arriving at his residence from a visit to Fort Worth Saturday. Funeral services will be held here tomorrow.
Sweeney was state supervisor of veterans education with the state board of education at the time of his death.
He umpired in the National Texas and Pacific Coast leagues in the twenties, officiating in some capacity in 37 states.
He was a football referee in the Southwest Conference long after his retirement as a baseball umpire. He was assistant manager of Hotel Texas in Fort Worth for a year and a half and previously was assistant manager and publicity director of the Baker Hotel in Mineral Wells for seven years.
Sweeney played football at Bethany College in West Virginia.
Surviving are his widow and two brothers, Edwin S. Sweeney of Columbus, Ind., and Will Sweeney of Lexington, Ky.
